What this tool does

DOTS multiplies your total by a coefficient that depends on bodyweight and sex. Heavier totals at lighter bodyweights score higher. It is a ranking tool, not a health score.

How it works

The IPF 2019 polynomial sits in the denominator; 500 divided by that polynomial is the coefficient. We clamp bodyweight to a realistic adult range so the curve cannot explode.

Formula and methodology

DOTS = total × 500 / (A + B·bw + C·bw² + D·bw³ + E·bw⁴) with published male/female coefficients (IPF, 2019). Bodyweight and total in kilograms.

How to interpret the result

A 700 kg total at 90 kg bodyweight lands in a familiar hundreds-range DOTS. Do not compare your gym total in kilos to someone’s pounds total.

Example

Male, 90 kg, 700 kg total produces a DOTS in the mid-400s on the 2019 curve — in the same neighborhood as public meet tables.

Common mistakes

  • Entering only a bench as the “total.”
  • Mixing pounds and kilos.
  • Using a gym total with half-depth squats as a meet DOTS.

When this estimate may be off

  • Equipped lifting vs raw — the formula does not know your shirt.
  • Bodyweight was not on the same morning as the total.

Frequently asked questions

Is DOTS the same as Wilks?

No. Wilks is an older coefficient. DOTS is the IPF’s later replacement. Do not mix them in one ranking.

Do I include bodyweight in the total?

No. Total is the three lifts. Bodyweight is the scale.

Can I estimate a missing lift first?

Yes — use the one-rep-max calculator, then add the three estimates. That DOTS is even more of a sketch.
