How Much Protein Do I Need If I Lift 3 Times a Week?

Three lifting days is enough training to justify more protein than the sedentary RDA, but it does not call for a contest-prep diet. For most healthy adults who lift three times a week, a practical daily target sits around 1.4–2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight — the range the International Society of Sports Nutrition uses for exercising people. If a large share of body weight is adipose tissue, some people set protein from a goal weight or an estimated lean mass. That is a refinement, not a requirement for week one.

Older lifters often do better toward the upper half of the serving-size guidance (closer to 40 g in a meal rather than 20 g) because the muscle-building response to a given dose can be blunted with age.
